Radish

Raphanus sativus

Radish

Appearance: The radish is a small, generally round vegetable, but some varieties can also be elongated. They are often pink or red on the outside, with white flesh on the inside. Radishes can also be white, purple or black, depending on the variety.

Texture and taste: Radishes are very crunchy, with a slightly pungent flavor that varies in intensity according to variety and freshness.

How to use them ? The radish is a versatile vegetable. It can be eaten raw, pickled, roasted or sautéed. Here are a few ideas:

  • Raw: Perfect for salads or raw vegetable platters.

  • Pickled: Quickly pickled radishes can add a zesty touch to dishes. They can be used in so many different ways!

  • Roasted/sautéed: Roasting radishes reduces their spiciness and brings out their mild and sweet flavor.

  • Leaves: Don't throw the leaves away! Use them to make nutritious soups, tasty pestos or even savory muffins.

Production season: Radishes are in season from mid-May to mid-October. However, some varieties, such as the cello radish, can be grown until December, offering extended availability throughout the year.

Storage :

  • Refrigerator: Store radishes in the refrigerator crisper. They generally keep well for 1-2 weeks.

  • In an airtight plastic bag/container: This keeps them fresh and crisp for longer.

  • With tops separated: If possible, remove tops before refrigerating radishes, as they can extract moisture from radishes, making them soft more quickly.

Additional tip: When radishes lose their crunchiness , you can restore it by plunging them into iced water for about an hour before eating them.

Nutritional informations: Radishes are low in calories, but high in nutrients. They are high in vitamin C, that is essential for general health and the absorption of other nutrients. They also contain other nutrients such as potassium, calcium and iron. All these nutrients are equally useful for overall health. Radishes are also a good source of dietary fiber, which help digestion! Their antioxidant content support the immune system and reduce inflammation.
